Rob logans comments on weight and balance are something I have been
considering for quite some time. With the advent of more and more quick
build items available from Lancair (all of witch add weight to the basic
kit) and the insistence of some builders to install everything including
the kitchen sink (A/C, de-ice, hot props, fire extinguishers c/d
players, extra fuel tanks, etc.)the EW of the average Lancair just keeps
climbing. When I completed my 1st IV-P using no quick build kits and a good King
avionics package, the EW was about 2130#. My Turbine weight's in at
about 2350 WITHOUT lots of the stuff listed above. With full fuel, one
pilot and a small co-pilot you are at the factory recommended gross!
Even though my aircraft seems to stay within CG limits as you load it,
the gross can exceed recommendations in a hurry. It is easy to increase
gross weight with the pen when you register, but what does that do to
the safety of the aircraft and passengers.
Something to think about when you're installing all that neat stuff in
your bird.
