OK, I received a new SW oil cooler to replace my other one (figured maybe it was coked up or something..guy at Pacific said that was a possibility).  This is  the 6 vane model that he stated was the most popular for O-320's and was the same one that I already had.

I sustained a climb to about 7500 feet and managed to rack up around 235 degrees.  It would settle down to about 205-210 in cruise.  I don't like it.   I'd hate to see what it's still gonna do on a hot day.  Looking through the front of the cowl it just seems to defy physics that enough air is crossing over those cylinders (enough cool air at that) and running down the 3" scat tubing to the oil cooler.
Soooo... I am going to put in a dedicated NACA scoop and hopefully get this thing cured once and for all.

Steve,

I don't think that your intake oil cooler air is the problem. Many builders have had problems with cylinder head temperatures because of airflow but I can't remember reading anything about oil cooler problems.

My O-320 oil never hits 200 degrees. We have the same setup except that I have a 2 3/4 inch hose instead of 3 inches. I believe that your problem is the pressure differential between the front and back of the oil cooler.

If the back of the oil cooler is in a high pressure area, putting in a NACA scoop won't do any good.

You need to find out what the air pressures are at the front and back of the oil cooler before you start cutting holes in the fuselage sides. The same applies to where you cut the holes. Some areas on the fuselage sides are high pressure and some are low. You need to know.
