According to sunrise Aviation and Mike Church (One of the best aero instructors around), to properly execute a barrel roll one must push negative beginning at the point of reaching the knife edge until reaching the inverted position.  It is not possible to maintain a constant radius from the imaginary reference point without using negative forces.  without the negative it really isn't a barrel roll that you are executing.
