I was on one of my flights to a local TRSA field (Rockford, IL). I fly out of
a grass strip and on this trip I took the owners son with me. He is a just
college graduated CFI and he sometimes goes with me to get in some flying time.
We got fuel, etc. We were at the first turnoff waiting for a small jet to
take off in front of us from the end of the runway. They took off and I radioed the tower that I was ready, just having finished my runup. They said
to wait for wake turbulance. The CFI said that I could waive it, as they
did it all of the time at their flight school when they were following the
smaller jets. I don't know how much flight time he had, but I had a total
of about 100 hours and I didn't want to do aerobatics in a 180hp Cherokee, so I told him that we would wait.
I don't know what I would have done had I been in Bill's position. It seems
that the controller put him him in a bad spot if he had other traffic coming in and he knew he would have to hold a takeoff for wake turb.
