Refueled and departed Las Vegas approximately 10 AM. Wx clear. Tower cleared me for a VFR departure to pick up my IFR clearance enroute and when clearing me for takeoff; advise me to use caution for wake turbulence. (They fly large ugly multiengine turboprop charter flights from North Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon - look something like a grayhound bus with wings) Well, I was # 2 behind one of these charter flight, so I watched him until he started his turnout. Delayed my takeoff. Tower advise either I take off or clear the runway. SOooo, I took off (BAD CHOICE).!!!!!!!! Everything was normal until the wheels left the runway; then the acrobatics started. Controls had absolutely no effect. Plane hit runway sideways and gear folded. Lucky we didnt hit first on nosegear or we could have cartwheeled. (BAD for survival). Lucky we had inertia reel seat belts!!!! All gear folded under and we slid to a very sudden stop in the dirt off the side of the runway. No injuries except I cut my head on sun visors. Lots of blood. 4 hours in E.R. for 5 stitches. Just got bill from hospital. They charge $ 4024 for 5 stitches. (Guess I'm in the wrong business) Friendly folks at Lone Mountain Aviation helped out. Picked up plane, drained fuel, and pulled wings. Plane will be trucked back to Tracy this week for repair. Many thanks to Tom and Lorraine Zedeker(sp?) for their hospitality and assistance. MORAL # 1: DO NOT do acrobatics until at least 1 mile (preferably 2) above runway. MORAL #2: STAY AWAY from grayhound bus with wings Appreciate all the kind words from folks on the list.
