Probably half of my 1600 hrs. of military flight time was spent in formation. I also spent a year in the 3rd Marine Air Wing Safety & Standardization Office as a NATOPS* check pilot, where my job was to help train and do check rides for squadron "stan pilots,"** who did the check rides for squadron pilots. Caveat: The above experience was gained over 25 years ago. I've killed a lot of brain cells since then (gotta have my Jack!), so cut me some slack if my recollection is a little fuzzy! Also, I was in my mid-20s and bulletproof back then, and never thought twice about flying with my canopy three feet from my lead's wing-tip. Now that I'm more mature (some would debate that!) and more responsible, I'm thinking ten feet might be a good separation, maybe fifteen!
