However, being an avid reader of and learner from every piece of literature I can find on building our airplanes, I can at least quote some experts. The sainted Tony Bingelis and several others say that the reason we see "print-through" of the fabric after painting is the resin continues to shrink for a long time (i.e. months) after lay-up. So if your composite structure is relatively "green" when you paint it, you're going to get some print-through. My airplane was painted a year after it first flew in primer, and I have several spots of print-through. I'm planning to re-paint my plane this summer, so I'd love to hear from others what they've done to prevent fabric print-through on "mature" paint jobs.
