For those of you with the MKII tail, what is the minimum gap required
between the inboard edge >of each elevator and the vertical stabilizer. Angier,
My right side gap is 3/16". The left is 1/4". Mine are not as tight as
they could be.
It looks like the minimum gap for the right elevator is controling
since this elevator needs >>to be installed at an angle in order for its
pin to be inserted into the left elevator >>>>>.control horn.
This is different on my plane. I am limited by vertical tail access
hole size. Once I get the horns inside the tail the elevators can go in
roughly flat. The connect through the center attach hinge very easily.
A little play is available resulting from the access holes on the lower
side of the elevators. These holes had to be large enough to turn an
open end wrench.
To reiterate a possibly obvious safety concern in this phase of the
build; It is paramount that any access plate covering the vertical tail
access hole have attach screws located outside the range of elevator
travel. That is, imagine an attach screw for the access cover
unscrewing itself half way out. It cannot interfere with the elevators.
The access hole on my plane is too small. It's safe but an absolute
hassle to install and remove elevators. I've chopped and bent up a
couple 3/8" end wrenches to make it doable.
