To All
As most of you know, Continental starts our warranty 6 months after delivery weather we are flying yet or not. My first flight came at about two years after delivery which means that I should have about a year and a half left on the 3 Year warranty that Continental Brags about.
I have a problem with my Alternator. Ever since the first flight, the 5 amp circuit breaker would pop sometimes. At first it seamed to be only when it was at maximum charge, but after a couple of flights it would pop a couple of times per hour while just cruising around at 25 inches MPH. I had the Alternator checked and they found that the Field resistance checked less than 4 Ohms. (I'm told it should be between 6 and 12 Ohms) This would explain the excessive current drain on the field circuit. We called Continental and they said that any parts on the engine supplied by an outside vendor were not guaranteed by continental. The Guarantee on the Alternator is one year. So here I am with an engine with 17 hours on it and I'm looking at a bill for either $1400 for a new Alternator, $495 for a rebuilt or Maybe a $200 Repair of my alternator. I am very disappointed in Continental.
A word to the wise. Do not order your engine until everything except the cowl is finished.
