There was a considerable discussion on this subject back in
August and September 2000 which strongly influenced the trim controls in
my LNC2. I felt it was not enough to be able to turn off the trim in
case of a runaway; one should be able to bring the airplane back into
trim. To this end I have two sets of pitch and roll trim controls, one
on the pilot's stick, the other on the forward end of the console. The
latter has the typical MAC rocker switches and LED indicators as well as
two DPDT switches to select which set of switches is active. If the
active switch goes ape and drives the trim at its own whim, it is only
necessary to deselect that switch, select the other and drive the trim
back to where it should be. In the very unlikely event of some other
failure -- can't imagine what that would be except massive shorting of
wires, in which case the circuit breaker or fuze will probably take care
of turning off the power to the trim -- the DPDT switches can be placed
in the center OFF position.
A secondary reason for choosing this configuration was to
allow someone flying from the right seat to be able to use trim controls
without having to provide a top cap switch and its related relays for
the right hand stick.
