High-end race car builders have used that location as a souce of higher-than-ambient inlet air for many years. And yes, at high AOA, the benefit is somewhat reduced. BUT, at high AOA, your airspeed is usually much lower than in cruise (unless you're doing some fun-flying, apparently inadvisable in Lancair aircraft) which limits the available gain anyhow.
