Some time ago I was asked for a photo of my Y valve used for Filtered vs
Ram air. Attached are two photos. You'll notice it had to be very
tight to fit into my cowl. This prototype has one major flaw. While
running exclusively RAM airflow, it backwashes the filter. This slight
pressure loss is only relevant while racing. I expect it's around 1/2"
of Manifold Pressure.
A second design using a conical K&N filter mounted pointing forward
might provide a better product. It could be fiberglass sleaved to yield
filtered ram all the time. Or...If one thought there was still too much
loss the top cap on the filter could perhaps be elegantly made into a
valve allowing direct Ram above dirty altitudes.
