Thanks for all the responses to my question about switch functions on the Infinity. One of the responders suggested letting others know what I decided. This is obviously a personal choice, but here' are the functions I decided to order:
Coolie hat --- Elevator and rudder trim.
Knuckle-side of coolie -- Aileron trim, with sideways-mounted (on)-off-(on) switch.
Thumb-side of coolie --- Flaps, with forward-mounted on-off-(on) switch. (On) is the downward direction.
Trigger --- Push to talk.
Half way down thumb switch --- Stormscope clear and checklist toggle.
Bottom pinkie switch --- Autopilot engage/disengage and control wheel steering.
This is the same setup indicated in Pat Weston's post, which was where I was leaning except for the "Stormscope clear" suggestion. I was planning on using a switch for GPS steering, but the Stormscope suggestion really caught my eye out here in the thunderstorm capital of the world (the U.S. east coast), where my go/no-go decision in the summer often depends on whether I have a stormscope (far more important than a GPS in the summer). I purchased a WX-1000+ second hand from a business jet upgrading to a WX-500 for an EFIS. Got a good price on eBay (yes, eBay can work), and the bench check was fine. It allows remote switching of the "clear" function when the scope is on, and toggles through the (programmable) checklist when in that mode, e.g., during takeoff or landing. So I'll have both of these functions in one stick-mounted switch. What a country.
Pat did indicate that there have been a couple times in his ES when the copilot/passenger has inadvertently bumped the flap switch into the up mode. To counteract this issue, I've decided to put a switch on the panel that disables the co-pilot stick switches. The left-seat flap switch may still be susceptible to inadvertent bumping, but a downward bump only momentarily lowers the flaps, and an upward bump from reading a chart or similar seems pretty unlikely while landing.
Thanks for the ideas,
Dan O'Brien
