Subject: ES Rudder - Bond Separation
Date: Wed, 04 Sep 2002 14:34:43 -0400
To: <lml>
I am building a Super ES, with the fast-build rudder and tail.  I have recently finished installing the two fast-build vertical tail skins, and was preparing to bond the right rudder assy. to the left skin (which is still one with the left vertical tail) when I noticed what appeared to be areas of separation between the skin and rudder spar.  There were two separate areas, one at the corner where the counter weight is located, and the other at the center hinge point.  The latter was approx. 9-10" in length.  As I investigated further, it looks as if the bond joint may not have been properly prepared and is now separating.  With a little prodding, the separation has spread to what is now approx. 18" in length, and almost the full width of the bond line.  The remainder of the assembly shows no sign of separation.

I have spoken with Jim in tech support and he has referred me to Carsten.  I am presently waiting for a call back from Carsten to discuss a solution.

I am bringing this up to the group so that everyone with the quick-build rudder assemblies can inspect for any signs of bond failure.

As in the past, I am confident that Lancair will provide full support in resolving this issue.
