The mandatory retrofit is not the $1,000 unit. It is a replacement of the
nose wheel fork and the
GM -? (looks like the head of wood golf club) on the factory supplied nose
gear assy.The latest GM?
is made of steel. If you have it you have the mandatory replacement. The
$1,000 assy. is an option
that replaces the 235 nose gear assy with a semi-hydraulic one like the
320s have. Many (most?) 235s
were converted to the later assy, because the original would shimmy
violently, if the nose wheel
touched before the mains, on landing and the pivot wasn't adjusted right or
had oil on it. This
shimmy often broke the nose gear and /or the motor mount. Many planes
including mine still use the
original style nose gear. You just have to hold the plane off till the
mains touch.
