Matt, et al,

There's a lesson in all of this ... Make sure the emergency gear down procedure works - especially the gas strut in the nose (it will have to push against the wind), and that you can lock the mains with no more than a couple of pounds of pressure.

Your discovery is why most testing is done with a battery -- But, think about it.  If the battery is weak, the gear is not going down with vigor, although probably better than no hydraulic push at all.

And, I learned a lesson also.  The next time I will ask about the source of power.
