Leading edge tape accomplishes
two admirable qualities on the IV;
1. prevents erosion of the leading edge paint due to rain and ice pellets
2. may trip laminar flow to turbulent flow
at high AOAs preventing laminar separation

Laminar separation is a nasty situation
where airflow detaches from the leading
edge moving rapidly aft as opposed to the
rather well behaved stall where separation slowly migrates aft to forward. Modest applications of heat helps release tape.
