I had a cessna 172 on leaseback about 25 years ago and the experience
was not very good.
Although it flew an average of 75 hrs a month (good) the maintenance cost
were on going. The people who do the leasing (usually students) are not as
concerned with the equipment as the owner would be.Radios were always a
problem, switches being the worst. These were narco tube radios that were
subject to more problems than to days avionics, but at the time they were
new. Also dont forget on leaseback the airplane is subject to 100 hr inspections
One main problem I had was getting bumped from my own scheduling of the airplane, After several go around with the culprits (usually instructors) I
pulled it off the line.
Way back when a person could write off the purchass of a new
plane,several
people did buy them and lease them back.I knew of two who did this and
didn't even know how to fly and didn't care to learn.Notice I said
new.If
you are buying a new plane you will probably come out better, less
maintenance and it will probably be flown more,(help with those Huge
payments.
I.F.R. air planes will fly more.
If you decide to do this, sit down with the leasee and find out what your
costs are going to be.Maintanance, insurance, tiedown,I know the last one
sounds strange but things like this can jump up and bite you in the you
know where when least expected.
Leasebacks might have changed from my expereance, but I bet one thing
hasnt, getting bumped from scheduling your very own airplane when you have a
family outing planned on the 4th of July. Good luck.
