That is what I did. Also you can recess the mounted fitting portion of the handle mechanism into the fuselage. There is about a 3/16 in recess on the front of the fitting and flush at the rear. This careful setting of the mechanism only required about 1/8 inch of micro below the handle and tapered to the fuselage side over a four inch drop. The final result is a very smooth flush mounted handle conformed to the perceptable original fuselage profile. You can bend the handle with it clamped with wood wrapped with cloth in a vise and use pliers or vise grips treated the same way to prevent scaring the chrome. I also recessed the locking mechanism so the face is also flush against the fuselage. I have also seen the handle sticking out from the fuselage facing in its original shape. Easier to install but I prefered the extra pizazz.
