Creating multiple training, safety, and mechanical inspection programs may well backfire. Insurance companies love to take your money, and after that fact, they hate to pay out. Agreeing to attend seminars, inspections, recurrent training, etc, just adds to the loopholes the insurance carrier can exploit. Weren't there some threads on this site two or three years ago about one of the insurance carriers doing just that? I also disagree with your math. $800 K premiums from 100 Lancair owners would not entice me one bit. That could be paid out by one or two gear up landings. And, just look at the terrible record we have as a group. All the recurrent training, inspections, seminars, etc will not keep the 20,000 hour ATP pilot from running out of gas, nor will it keep the high hour instructor from taking off from a turf field that is too short, nor will it preclude putting 4 three hundred pounders in the cabin. We have had 6 years of LIV experience and 10 years of other model experience, and we have shown that we are careless and in some cases, damned stupid as a class of pilots. If a program were designed to trim our egos and give us a dose of reality, our success might be more assured. Meanwhile, some of us are going bare with respect to coverage. Maybe that is not so bad. We are more careful in what we do, because we know Big A is not going to run up and present us with a check when our ego overcame our judgement.
