The best thing a small group of Lancair insurance interested parties could do is to investigate the details of the coverages and requirements of currently available insurance. Compare the offering to the often berated and expensive AVEMCO coverage while keeping these facts in mind: AVEMCO's coverage and costs are directly related to membership in and use of the EAA. To wit: 1. EAA active members receive a nominal discount. 2. If you use an EAA tech counselor for three inspections and an EAA flight advisor for an evaluation of your flight experience and for flight-test check-lists, AVEMCO will insure your first x hours and first 10 takeoffs and , of course, subsequent landings. 3. AVEMCO may require you to receive 2 or 5 or more hours of dual in a like airplane depending on your experience (retractable, high performance, etc.). 4. For each year you retain AVEMCO coverage, AVEMCO will (up to 3 yrs, I think) cover you for your liability after the sale of your aircraft. 5. AVEMCO will give you the option of repairing your own airplane and pay you for it to boot. 6. AVEMCO does not deal thru brokers. Use the creative part of your mind for what that implies about locked quotes. Disclaimer - Those few items are from memory and may not be exactly accurate - check them out for yourself. Those items listed above may be inaccurate, incomplete or completely wrong. See your attorney, clergy, personal Guru or bartender for advice on your next step. In the old days, AVEMCO had some ugly language about post certification major changes and, in fact, denied accidental collateral damage payment because an airplane was not airworthy because the FAA had not been notified of a fuel system change (major) because that notification was required in the pre- year 2000 certificate "limitations". EAA has had this changed - both with the FAA's certificate limitations and with AVEMCO's coverage language. After all, that part of the EAA that still cares about Experimental aircraft has worked closely with both the FAA and AVEMCO on our behalf in many ways. Maybe AVEMCO will not cover certain aircraft. Maybe their premium is too high. Maybe their liability coverage is too low. Maybe the ownership and operation of an experimental aircraft requires some personal accountability and risks different than the secure certainty of coverage from womb to tomb and beyond that many have come to expect these days. I have no interest in AVEMCO (other that my yearly premium). I have their "pile of parts" coverage for my unbuilt Legacy. On my 320, I have their inadequate liability coverage and "not in motion" coverage since I can't control the fuel truck backing into my airplane at some destination airport. I do not carry "in motion/flight" hull coverage any more since it is a fixed loss for which I have grown tired of making pre-payment bets on. I especially stopped the in flight hull coverage when I owned 3 airplanes and couldn't get a deal on any combined coverage even though I was the only named pilot on all three. At least my car insurance company recognizes discounts for safe operation and insuring more cars than drivers in the household. If you got this far, thanks for bearing with the stream-of-conciousness of a flighty curmudgeon.
