<< Lancair Builders' Mail List >>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<--->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
As one whose name has appeared a few times in this thread I thought I should at least let the group know how I felt on this subject currently I am a DAR ,flight advisor, and factory and most insurance companies approved pilot.
I have licensed many lancairs, provided inspections and training (after phase one) I also wrote the original syllabus for training pilots in lancair IV's. I watched as the factory training became to much for lancair. They are really a small company and when the training was becoming to much to handle the went as far as letting another company use their factory aircraft to supplement their sim training to make a training program possible. Unfortunately this resulted in 409L getting wrecked during training.Remember lancair sells kits I don't think its fair to lay blame on them because tks isn't a current option.
The program suggested sounds more intensive than flight safety. When I was running lear jets we budgeted 7000 dollars a year for flight training and two weeks time not counting the cost of the plane when other than sim time was required.
I feel that this association will only cause bad things to happen to all lancair owners. Right now Insurance companies are insuring lancairs your rates depend on how safe they feel you are. There is nothing new your association brings . All the training and safety precautions are already out there for any who want them.
On a personal note this would harm me. I currently get insurance on my lancair cheap and no hassle. Do I want to spend several thousand dollars a year and two weeks time with no pay to get recurrent training I don't want.
Lastly this whole scenario reminds me of the few good intentioned people that started fooling around with race insurance to make it safer and better for all .When they started everyone could get covered and it was cheap .Now race insurance requires 10 days in the off season traveling to reno spending money to attend the school and pass a check ride then spending a fortune on the premium that only one carrier will write (no computation).
The best way to get low rates on your lancair is find out what will make the insurance carrier happy (training ect) and do that.I know that several companies will Insure a first flight If im the pilot .Im sure there are other test pilots that insurers do the same thing with.
Please don't make a bad situation worse by giving the insurers another place to spend your money to protect them from claims.If this assoc happens does anyone think they will be able to get insured without meeting the same requirements.
