There is an error in Chapter 8 page 8-29 showing the assembly of the aileron pushrod ends. Hopefully it was nothing but a typo, but a dangerous one. This page shows using AN470A4-24 rivets. WRONG ! The correct rivet is an AN470AD4-4. As most of you may know, NEVER use an "A" rivet in a structural application. Lancair is aware of the problem in the manual and I was told that they would be publishing a correction. It's interesting to note that a few days ago Cirrus, the arch rival of The Lancair Company (Columbia 300 and 400), issued a mandatory service bulletin which affects 116 Cirrus SR22 aircraft. Part of Cirrus SB 22-55-03 states: COMPLIANCE Mandatory: Cirrus Design considers this Service Bulletin to be mandatory. Accomplish this Service Bulletin as soon as possible, not to exceed 10 flight hours. Compliance time begins upon receipt of this Service Bulletin. PURPOSE Some MS20470A4 rivets may have been installed on some SR22 control surface attach points in place of the required MS20470AD4 rivets. These rivets are of a softer alloy (1100-F) than the alloy used in the required rivets (2117-T3) and have less strength. Failure of these rivets may constitute a safety of flight issue. The purpose of this Service Bulletin is to inspect specified rivet installations at the rudder mid and upper hinge and the elavator torque tube attach points, and replace any rivets that are determined to be of incorrect type. As a comparison: "A" rivet - Shear Strength 10000 psi - Bearing Strength 25000 psi "AD" rivet - Shear Strength psi 30000 - Bearing Strength 100000 psi Y'all be careful out there.
