I fly Boeings at work and if we have smoke in the cockpit, you'd better believe I'll descend, depressurize and open a window to remove the smoke. When I was flying off carriers in the Indian Ocean , we came across a B-52 one day that was loitering in our area low and slow. I rendezvoued with him and the pilot was flying with his window open and his arm resting on the sill as if he was driving on a freeway. There are also many planes, including light civil (Grumman Tiger for one) that are approved to fly with the canopy open. As Chuck Yeager said, "I don't recommend it, but it can be done".
