Brian Barbata brings up a lot of good points.  This one line, however, is the 
only place where I disagree.  I think it would be far better for the industry 
to propose guidelines for the FAA rather than wait to see what they come up 
with on their own.  To that end, I applaud the efforts of the FAA, Larry 
Graves, Mary Senft, the EAA, and anyone else who will be working with the FAA 
to promulgate these rules which will probably become necessary eventually.  
Perhaps we can channel our ideas on this subject through them, so that the 
ideas get aired at the appropriate levels.  As I recall, Mary Senft offerred 
to do so at last summer's Lancair Dinner at Oshkosh.

I think most of us agree that proper use of professional help can result in a 
safer product.  Therefore, builder assistance is a good idea.  But given the 
fact that mini non-certified airplane shops are springing up like mushrooms 
(okay, slow mushrooms...) it's in all of our best interest to make sure that 
the ones that are out there can put out quality workmanship, and that the 
builder is involved enough to make an *informed* decision as to whether to 
strap his butt to the airplane.
