Dave,

I agree with you 100% regarding some sort of affiliation to reduce risk, 
lower insurance costs and provide for safer aircraft/ pilots.  My experience 
in GA these days has been mainly on the American Bonanza Society side of 
things providing specialized flight training for owner/ pilots via their 
flight training program. The syllabus is one day of ground school and two 
days of flying. Ground school covers aircraft specific systems, procedures,  
etc. Flight training is geared to the specific aircraft and how to fly it 
properly IFR and VFR.  While pilots are in ground school a DAR/ A&P is giving 
their aircraft a thorough inspection for airworthiness items. 

Participants who successfully complete get a BFR and IPC sign off by the CFI. 
Most insurance companies recognize value of training and give some discount 
for those who participate. I flew with a very experienced gentleman yesterday 
in his new A-36 Bonanza-- his insurance company requires proficiency training 
at least once a year.

Recurrent training is what insurance companies are looking for. 

This kind of program could be set up for Lancair fliers if there is an 
interest. Let me know what you think.
