Having just completed my instrument training and checkride, I concur that some of the foggles allow for a great great deal of cheating. When I mentioned this to my CFII, he dug into the depths of his ancient Jepp case and brought out a pair of old woodshop goggles with blue "painters' tape" applied to make a much more comfortable and far more effective outside reference mask. With tape applied correctly, and used with decent discipline on the part of the student, they formed an inexpensive solution. Because it is so easy to add a layer of tape to really fine tune the inhibiting aspects of these glasses, a custom fit for your particular viewing profile and habits is ensured. HINT> cut out the bottoms of the plastic shielding wrap-around for better ventilation and comfort. Wish I could take credit for this, but a tip of the hat to my CFII David Zeidler, and my thanks to him for a very thorough and practical approach to instrument flying. (Yes, I passed) ---Regards to all, build and fly safely, Jeffrey B.
