Greetings Martin,
I had a problem with a pump. It turned out to be the pump itself sucking
air. The pump is a gear pump, with two little gears doing the pumping. They
mount in the pump body and there's a cover plate that encloses the gears.
The problem turned out to be the cover plate not sealing to the pump body
(metal to metal) allowing air to be sucked into the suction side of the
pump. The solution was to make the cover plate perfectly flat, it wasn't,
and then reinstalling it with the thinnest smear of loctite hydraulic
sealing compound. Problem solved.
This changed the pump dramatically, on start up it runs smoothly and much
more quietly, and of course no longer injects air into the hydraulic system.
Regards, Roberto d'Australia
