The Legacy airframe has been subjected to extensive load failure tests and flutter analysis. In addition, we got to see the Philippine plant and various fabrication areas. Many of us went over Carsten's Legacy with a fine toothed comb. Fortunately, his interior was not finished so we had ample opportunity to peer about. Carsten disassembled the seats so we could get a look at the Tru-Trak autopilot installation and the small servos. The glare shield was also off and the neatly done UPS avionics stack was easily seen. Notes are as follows: 1: It was noticed that his rudder trim tab was easily wiggled and this as of some concern. The hinge is fastened to the tab with pop rivets except in the area of the bellcrank. The result was gap of several inches between the rivets straddling the bellcrank and allowing a great deal of hinge flex in that area. Carsten placed a rivet on each side of the bellcrank for more support and rigidity. Check yours. When I examined mine, there was a hole drilled for a rivet, but it was directly under the bellcrank and was filled with micro. I used this hole as a guide to drill and tap a 6-32 3/8 inch deep hole thru the skin, hinge and into the center of the bellcrank. I have installed a 6-32 flat head screw because I think that it is more secure and rigid than the rivets with no loss in the strength required for the bellcrank. 2: Carsten explained that there are some changes coming for the main gear: a. The main gear "fork" will be re-welded so that the axle will be angled to the rear slightly, making the wheel well clearances better. b. The inboard gear door will be stiffened with carbon lay-ups and, as many may have noted, the door hinges are made from stainless with a 1/8 inch pin. c. The door bellcrank will be lengthened to further stiffen the leading edge of the door. 3: Carsten also noted that the aileron trim tab is too small for wing fuel imbalances greater than 7 or 8 gallons (if I remembered correctly). 4: His required departure fly by was impressive -- I tried to use my fancy high speed digital camera for a picture and all I got was blue sky with a smudge in the corner.
