An AC is not regulatory, correct? I assume CFR-14, Part 91 regulates the test period. If this is the case, then there is no direct guidance here. You also have the PIC clause that allows you to do whatever is necessary for safe flight. Having a second crewmember with time in type makes sense to me. If there is no written law, common sense should prevail.
