When I built my first ES, I didn't put stall strips on before flying it
in primer. When Charlie Kohler came over to do the checkout and first
flights, he didn't like it much because, as Mark Lally notes, there was no
pre-stall buffet. Perhaps the more important point is that without stall
strips, there may be circumstances in which a wing tip might stall before
the root, which could lead to rather exciting wing drops, etc. As a quick
fix, Charlie and I made some rough and dirty stall strips out of Clark foam
and just taped them on the wings. They were only about 1/2" high and about
10 or 12" long, and we located them by precision eyeball. They worked fine,
providing a gentle but distinct buffet prior to stall. (Later, of course, I
glassed and filled and bonded, etc., etc.)
Unfortunately we were not thinking about their effect on stall speed, so
I can't provide a comparison of with vs. without. Would be interesting.
Still, if I were going to be pushing the landing performance, trying to
touch down at minimum airspeed, I'd want all the warning I could get of an
impending stall. BTW, the stall strips are already on my second ES, in
progress.
