The latest issue of Custom Planes includes a very interesting article about charging systems.  It did a great job of de-mystifying how the various components perform their functions and included some excellent trouble-shooting hints for the alternator/regulator system.  If you have any doubts about how these things work, or just wonder what the heck that "Field" wire to the alternator actually does, you really need to read this article.  Custom Planes is published by the same outfit that does Plane & Pilot, and is another welcome source of information for me every month.  If you can't find it on the local news stand, you can subscribe to it by calling 800-883-8851.
