I have understood that you must identify yourself as experimental upon initial contact with Ground or Tower, eg "experimental Lancair 123DE with information Alpha, at FBO xxx, taxi". After that initial contact, I just use my N number alone.

The local tower doesn't care and there seems to be some confusion amongst the local pilot community.
