It is fairly easy to add a canopy open warning system. I added a micro switch to the latch and get a annunciator light if the canopy is open. In addition, I added an aural (and more pronounced visual warning) if the canopy is unlatched and I have attained 30 kts airspeed. Just one way of trying to mitigate the problem.
