I don't carry paper approach charts as I have the required duplicity=C2=A0 [iPad and Ex500 w/ charts in the dash]. The Ex500 does not display enroute charts so I have to carry those in paper form.=C2=A0 That means two Leather Jepp binders. Having to download and print approach charts [or HI/LE ] doesn't work in my situation. I'm flying for a corporate department and we could be flying anywhere at a moments notice. I often flightplan on the road once I get the 'call'. Having to stop and print the required 40-50 approach charts for a trip [or even more if I'm headed someplace like Vegas or So-Cal] , isn't viable for those types of flight op's.=C2=A0 For the private owner who wants to try and shave some expense I could understand, however there is always the safety concern that you won't have the proper paper charts when you need them, even in a private senario [emergencies etc]. I guess until you've had a controler call you up and tell you that 'they closed the airport on you due to a plane on the runway w/ a flat tire' [or some similar senario] a person doesn't realize that you cannot have too much data on-board. To be able to have all the senarios covered w/ a set of printed charts is ...well to have the full Jepp=C2=A0setup for at least 100nm on either side of your track, plus a few= extras for the 'hey lets go there' senarios too..=C2=A0 Other reasons to use Jepp would be for my 430/530 updates as well as my Ex500 updates.... all come from Jepp. Keep in mind, the only trips that I file VFR on are the 27nm 'jump across' trips between my home airport and our local 'customs' airport, every other trip is an IFR trip so the update data is kinda important. If I didn't have the Ex500 in the dash I would have to carry two iPads or a one iPad and a set of papercharts as a backup [to be 'legal' for our flight ops due to electronic duplication requirements]. I see it as=C2=A0a similar perspective to the old saying.. 'the only time you have too much fuel onboard is when your on fire'...=C2=A0 you can never= have to much data onboard [at least within reason]. I guess I'm just superstitious or maybe paranoid Jarrett Johnson 235/320 55% On Wed, 17 Aug 2011 07:43:23 -0400, John Hafen wrote: If you like paper in your cockpit, try downloading approaches etc (like I do) for free from AOPA. > > Other than superstition and ignorance, and tradition, and old bad > habits, I'm not sure why anyone would have Jepp at this point. > > John > > > On Aug 16, 2011, at 11:57 AM, hjjohnson@sasktel.net wrote: > > Ya I saw that last week... an extra $140 over my ~$70 subscription for > the Canadian stuff but it's a great addition.
