Backup's are good.  I have a Garmin 190 VHF/GPS handheld that I have 
wired from my hot bus thru a switch so I can charge it while in flight.  
It has its own antenna.

When everything else goes dark, Im hoping that its internal battery 
lasts long enough to get me home.
