What do I need to focus on ?

1)       How fast the starter gear returns to original position ?

2)       Or the fact that it is still moving after being disengaged ?

Here is a link to a video that Aircraft Specialites made of a cutaway starter adaptor with a Iskra and a common old-style Presolite motor.

Basically it just shows the sliding worm gear not retracting all the way and it shows the end of the worm gear shaft no relaxing.

The mechanism needs to be able to unwind a bit so to relax  the clutch spring after engagement.

I just put a skytec starter to replace my iscra.  Replaced one drive under warranty.  The skytec has a solenoid which disengages the motor from the starter. The permanent magnet starters can create drag on the starter spring which results in wear.  Cirrus does not allow Continental to ship them motors with the Iscra.

Also had to replace my starter drive on an IO-550 in a Legacy.  Unfortunately, engine mounts had to be loosened and engine swung forward.

Apparently, different starters vary in their tendency to kill the starter drive adapter.  My understanding is that the Iskra is the worst and that the old Prestolite is the best.  Allen Barrett can probably give you further information.

I know there was some discussion a while back about starter drive issues, but I can't find any specifics.  I've developed a problem where the starter slips and won't engage, so I suppose I'm a victim of the TCM problem at 400hr TT.  Is is possible to remove the adapter without moving the engine forward?  I have an A/C pump on the back of the engine too, so it's very packed behind the engine.  I'm not even sure what to remove.  Anyone have some ideas to make this as easy as possible?   Any photos?
Thanks

Ron
