Re: Rob Wolf's question about using the same antenna for both DME and
Xponder.
I wouldn't do it, Rob - even if you didn't fry one or the other of the units
(particularly the DME receiver circuits, as the Xponder transmits with some
ooomph and they are sorta close, frequency-wise), the interaction would
probably scramble the encoded data in each, giving you erroneous results on
your DME and the Xponder output would drive ATC bonkers!
I have an RST Xponder antenna (it comes as a kit) in a wing-tip (the outer
couple of feet are dry) and it's what I consider a "hot" antenna. ATC can
paint me further out than I'm used to in a spam-can with a "standard" spike.
