You are correct in that all manufacturers have now switched
to liquid Teflon rather than the tape (in any mil thickness).
Bits of tape cause problems far too often.
The method I use to screw in a pipe threaded AN
fitting is easy:  Get a good grip on the part it is going into
in whatever way possible, ie. vise, extra hand or helper, and
start the fitting in.  It should have a small amount of Teflon
goo all around the first two threads but be sure to wipe the excess
from the tip so it won't get into the system.  When the fitting
begins to get tight make a determination to go the next
number of turns to the correct index.  If you cannot go one
more turn and the fitting is not tight then find a fitting with
the threads starting at a different starting point and try again.
The torque specs for pipe sometimes must be ignored and
good old common sense used as well as "German torque"
or "gootentight".
