I've been an A&P since 1969 and have a love for mags. I keep both the
Unison and TCM Bendix
maintenance and SB books on my shelf. A new pair of mags or a good low
time
pair properly maintained and inspected every 100 hrs will well serve a
pilot. What has always galled me as a mech is how some owners will pay
pleanty for an interior or an engine overhaul and then skimp on the mags.
When was the last time your rotors were remagnetized? Your coils and
capacitors changed? Bearings and end play checked? New points and
internal
timing are not everything. A good impulse coupling will reset to TDC for
start and usually it is improper priming that causes a hard start... hot
or
cold. Oh, another thought,
How ragged are your "P" leads, especially at the sheilding ground? Had
the
contacts in your mag switch changed ever? It's no wonder mags get a bum
rap
from some pilots. Mags have evolved quite a bit since I was a kid and all
for the better.
