[I went to the local hydraulic shop (there are Caterpillar dealers near
just about everywhere) and purchased some of their pipe thread sealant
that is designed specifically for use on NPT threads in hydraulic
applications.

Does this mean you can just screw the fitting in with this sealant until
it's seated and then back out to where you want the fitting to point and it
will seal.???

[Actually I found that if I paid close attention to the amount of
torque required to install the fitting I could pretty much feel where
it started to drag, indicating that there was probably less than a full
turn available before it bottomed out.  (NPT threads really don't
"bottom out" as they're tapered and simply reach a point where further
tightening becomes impossible... that's what I meant.)  Once that point
was reached I would clock the fitting around to its intended position without
backing off on it at all.  I feel that that procedure will yield a more
secure seal than tightening the fitting until it won't turn anymore and then backing it off.  Perhaps there's someone out there who has a better
method, I'd certainly like to hear it myself.  BTW, I've used this
method with much success on high pressure pumps that are designed to
deliver pretty viscous materials at up to 3500PSI, and it's always worked
for me in the past... I couln't see any reason why it shouldn't work in
our applications, and that's why I continue to use and recommend it
whenever I have the opportunity.  I hope this helps.    <Marv>    ]
