I guess I should have said it that way the first time. The fact that they can be turned at twice that RPM for short periods of time is a testament of their reliability. If you want to compare apples to apples here, we could use the Viper 488 cid engine as an example, one of the few modern auto engines with a displacement approaching the GA engines. Who would argue that this engine could be turned at 2500 RPM at 26 in MP for a very loooong time? I agree 100% with Ed Rosiak about lawyers being a major factor in slowing down GA development, in fact, I blame lawyers for 95% of all the problems in this country, but that's a whole nuther argument. I also agree that volume in manufacturing has a large part to do with pricing but, as an example, you can have a custom built V8 racing crankshaft manufactured, and by custom I mean you specify stroke and journal size for less than a completely stock Lycoming 4CYL crankshaft.
