Don't feel bad. I blindly scooped away the honeycomb and glassed in an aluminum strip, just like the manual said. Then I installed nutplates and bolted on the hinge. Don Goetz said "That was stupid. The aluminum is for when you don't scoop out the honeycomb and you pop rivet the hinge on. If you scoop out the honeycomb and go glass-to-glass, you don't need the aluminum strip."
