I was kinda sitting on the sidelines of this argument, but now I will pipe
in.
I know several people who have 100k plus on Lexus, Northstar, GM (and Ford
superstroke - some with as much as 400k miles - but those are diesel  - w/
500 ft lbs of torque!) engines without a tune-up.
And I can't even begin to compare the engine in a Ferrari or Porsche to a C
or L engine.  The Ferrari and Porsche engines are producing around .75 to 1
hp per liter - the C and L engines are more like .35 hp per liter.  They are
thoroughly modern, high performance engines, albeit with complexity to match
- multiple carbs or throttle bodies and multi valves.  Though the cost of a
tune-up is high, it is often due to the labor cost, which is typically about
2 times that of aviation ($85 to $100 per hour versus $50 per hour here for
an A&P).

If the quality of assembly and QC in a Lycoming or Continental were anywhere
close to that of high performance, high $ cars, I don't think many of us
would be upset.
