<< Lancair Builders' Mail List >>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<--->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
When I was mulling over what I'd put in my ES last year, I did a great
deal of talking about engine selection with a lot of respected engine
experts ranging from a couple of overhaul shops to A&P's to some operators
in the field. With the lone exception of our friends at Lancair, the
recommendation was to buy a Lycoming. I know there are a lot of happy
Continental owners out there who swear by the Continentals powering their
Cessnas, Beeches and many others, but I was consistently told that an
IO-550, particularly the TSIO-550 WILL NOT make it to TBO.
I made the decision to buy a low time IO-540, which will go in my ES. I
plan on putting an electronic ignition on it which should, I'm told,
increase horsepower and lower fuel consumption. I'm currently having a
mount and exhaust fabricated for it which were designed by a Lancair
engineer. It will cost me some time and money, but as one of our frequent
contributors to this list told me, "You can pay for a Lycoming now or you'll
pay for a Continental later".
Once I have the mount done, I'm willing to sell copies of the plans for
it for a portion of what they cost me to have drawn up. My fondest hope
would be that Lancair would buy the plans and make Lycomings available in
the IV's and ES's like they plan to do for the Legacy. I just wonder how
many more inflight failures and AD's it will take.
