I have to second Dan's comments on battery charging. I had the misfortune of working for a startup battery company for a couple of years while the aerospace industry was in the dumps. I learned more about batteries than I thought there ever was to know. I mean, they're just simple electron sources, aren't they?
I quickly discovered that every battery type needs a specific charging regimen for adequate performance and life. We don't normally think about this because we usually use plain ol' lead-acid batteries in our car, boats, airplanes, etc... and the charging requirements are the same.
Dan's right on with this comment. Check your battery instructions and make sure you've got the right voltage regulator setting. You'll be glad you did.
(By the way, the two-year hiatus from my aero career was actually interesting, but I'm glad it's over)
