A large part of cockpit noise comes from the propeller. There's practically no way to dampen that. Then there's exhaust and air noise. Again, practically no way to dampen these- other than ANR's. The reciprocating engine noise you can dampen - to a degree. So---my advice is "don't get carried away". Buy Bose or Lightspeed ANR's.
