For the last year I've used the Jeppesen data card service for keeping the
navdata in my Trimble GPS up to date.  Each month they send a new card and
you send back the old in a prepaid envelope.

Now, since I got the new service called Skybound, I'm able to download the
latest database and program my own card.  This I did for the first time
yesterday - and the process was seamless.  You'll need a PCMCIA port on your
computer.  Most laptop PC's have this built in.

The cost for the service is significantly cheaper and will pay for the
datawriter (approx $130) in the first year.  One aspect of the service is
that you can now get the section of the country that you use the most
without paying for areas that you rarely go into.  For instance, the cost of
the North American datacard service annually is $560.  The Skybound price
for the North American database is $325.  Now I'm getting just the western
states (I'm in California) which includes all of New Mexico, Colorado, etc.
and west.  This costs $250 via the internet.  I've been told that when I go
out of my area, like off to Oshkosh, that I can then get the whole US for
some additional fee.

Call the Jeppesen number if you're interested (1-800-621-5377)
