For fixed iron influences on a compass, like nutplates, the compensation adjustment screws will take care of that.
 
By the way, make sure that the button on your baseball cap or belt buckle is not made out of steel - it might also influence the 12th century guidance device.  Oh yeah, if there is steel in the stick, don't move it while in flight.
