Thanks for your kind remarks David,

A positive way of aligning a tube and a nut, for welding, would be to screw
a nut onto a piece of 5/16 all thread rod.  Place into the drill chuck in a
lathe tail stock.  Chuck up the tube piece into the lathe.  Move the two
parts together and tack weld.  Finish the welding out of the chuck.  If you
weld no better than me, let cool, and return the part to the chuck and clean
up the welding grapes with a cutting tool.

Before one goes to these lengths be sure you have enough thread run between
the rod end bearing check nut and where the threads end on the rod.
